Reference codes

Tax topics and reference codes need context.

A code or tax topic can point to a category of information, but it rarely tells the whole account story by itself.

How to read tax topics

IRS tax topics are general information pages. A WMR tax topic can be informational, related to refund timing, connected to offsets, or associated with a review. The same topic may not mean the same outcome for every filer.

How to ask about a reference code

  1. Post the reference code exactly as shown.
  2. Include the WMR message around it, but remove private information.
  3. Say whether transcripts show 846, 570, 971, 810, or no update yet.
  4. Include notices received and deadlines without uploading full letters.

Reduced refund and offset context

If a refund is reduced, members often compare tax topic language, offset notices, transcript entries, and deposit amounts. Official confirmation should come from the IRS, BFS, or the relevant state or agency.

Use the forum to compare patterns. Use official sources for final account decisions and appeal rights.
