IRS phone call prep: what to write down before dialing

Before calling, write your timeline on one page. It makes the call easier and helps you ask clear questions.

Write down:
  • Filed and accepted dates
  • Filing status and tax year
  • Whole-dollar refund amount
  • WMR message and any reference code
  • Transcript codes and dates
  • Notice or letter number
  • Questions you need answered

Only call numbers from IRS.gov or your official IRS letter.
